Since I’ve been in the hospital I’ve had some wonderful visitors. Family, friends, relatives, pro athletes, and even an oscar winning actor have taken the time to wish me well. But the visitors I had today may have been the most special yet. Because, today I met a few of my saviors.

It’s funny, if you asked me what they looked like yesterday I may not have known. but the minute they walked in I recognized them immediately. Standing before me were the three members of Boston EMS who were directly responsible for keeping me alive and getting me swiftly to the hospital. Apparently, they had been speculating about my outcome for two weeks and decided to surprise me with a visit, because “I was by far the most seriously injured patient they treated that day, and that they had not expected me to make it.”

When they told me about my time with them, and that ride to Beth Israel, I found myself fighting back the tears. Turns out, I had been very close to my end. Very close. They had applied not one, not two, but three tourniquets to my left leg, yet still my blood poured down off the stretcher and onto the floor. Both of my femurs were exposed and they were applying pressure to keep them in place. My right leg was so badly wounded from top to bottom they thought for sure it was gone. My blood pressure was nowhere to be found, and they were calling ahead and alerting the trauma team that I had turned ashen. (Which apparently is a skin tone indication that the patient is minutes from death.) But, what shocked them most was that through it all I fought to stay awake and was asking questions about my condition, about Caroline, and I even had the wits to correct one of them when they called me Chris. “I prefer Christian, not Chris.”

After the stories had been shared, I thanked them to the best that I possibly could, then we took a photo and said farewell. I hope that someday I see them again (just not while they are working) because I know that I have more thanks to give.
